Description: The Stack and Whack quilt is a fun and easy quit to make. The #1 key to a successful quilt is the Fabric Selection Use 100% cotton fabric. The main fabric makes a kaleidoscope effect in the block. This fabric sets the tone of the quilt.
Look for large floral and leaf prints with many colors. Abstract prints and ethnic designs offer interesting alternatives. Even “ugly duckling” prints can create and exciting design.
How to pick a workable print:
- The print should be medium to large in scale. One way to gauge the size of the print is to place your hand flat on the fabric along the selvage. If your hand covers more than one of the same motif in the design, the print will be too small to create great designs.
- Be careful not to pick a print with too much of the same color in between the motifs. This will mute the kaleidoscope effect.
- Look at the contrasts, lines and shapes in the print A variety will make more interesting blocks.
- Geometric designs create great block effects.
Supplies/Fabric requirements:
How much fabric you need is determined by the size of the quilt and the repeat of the design in the print.
To determine the repeat, look at the selvage of the fabric. See a specific flower or design. Look further along the selvage until you see that same design. Measure between the two and you will get the repeat measurement.
Main fabric indicated in yards

Throw 2 1/2. 3 ½ 5 6 ¾ 8 repeats
Queen 6 6 6 6 ¾ 8 repeats

Queen size 4 ¾ yards
The background fabric should compliment the main fabric without competing for attention. Buy something that will make the pinwheels pop and stand out.
