High Flying Birds by Georgia Johnson #31

Seats Left

This is a beginner to intermediate class utilizing basic skills. A beginner would highly benefit from this class for the sewing techniques that are applied in making this quilt. This is just simply a fun quilt to make using fat quarters, scraps, and 3 yards of background material. The quilt can be extremely inexpensive to as expensive as you desire by using up scraps, purchasing fat quarters or coordinated per-cut 10” 42 piece layer cakes. The quilt consist of 16 squares that measure 16 X 16 inches squared. The 16 squares formulate an interactive design of birds facing each other in a fun X using a solid background and bordered in two contrasting 1 ½” to 2 ½ “ solid colors light and dark.
The designers instructions include curved unit templates, project notes, a lesson page on curved piecing, using fusible web, and alternating boarder designs.
This patterns intent is to have a completed quilt top made in a weekend. This to me meant in one (1) day. The top was completed in a day (about 5 hours) in the sewing room-cutting out the pieces, fusing, sewing and boarding. A simple back and forth quilting technique can also be applied on a home machine, instead of long arm quilting, which would consist of two full days.

Cutting instructions:
In class cutting for one (2) 16 X16 blocks. You’ll need fabric for background, and 2 coordinating contrasting prints for 2 birds, orange material for beak, paper-backed fusible web (can be 8 1/2 x11 sheet or by the yard), and 1 black printed fabric for inter bird tail. NOTE: Again stressing only 2 blocks will be cut and sewn during class. If you choice to make sample blocks I’d use fat quarters and scrap materials. You do not need to purchase for the whole quilt unless you choose to do so.
